Nigerian make-up artist jailed for throwing cash at his wedding

A Nigerian make-up artist, Abdullahi Musa Huseini—known as “Amuscap” on social media—has been sentenced to six months in prison for violating currency laws by flinging naira notes while dancing at his wedding in December.

A high court in Kano delivered the sentence shortly after Huseini pleaded guilty. In Nigeria, the act of “spraying” money at celebrations is a common tradition symbolizing wealth and joy. However, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has intensified efforts to curb the practice, calling it a sign of disrespect to the national currency.

Huseini’s punishment falls under the 2007 Central Bank of Nigeria Act, which prohibits spraying, dancing on, or marching on the naira, with penalties including a fine of 50,000 naira (about $32) or at least six months in jail.

The EFCC said he had “tampered” with 100,000 naira during his wedding festivities. He joins a list of others, including transgender personality Bobrisky and actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, who were jailed for similar offences last year.

The verdict has sparked backlash online, with critics arguing that the punishment is excessive and highlights inconsistencies in Nigeria’s justice system—where major corruption cases often go unpunished while minor infractions like this receive strict penalties.
